8. A method to nurture design engineers for heavy electrical apparatus

This is about a story I heard from a person in a heavy electrical apparatus maker.

The top photo is not directly related to this story.

Though this is about how to raise a design engineer at the particular factory, it seems to be no more possible to practice today. Thus this has become a real old tale.

At that maker's factory, an incident occurs upon a new employee assigned to the engineering department in April (new academic year), at around the time the young person becomes accustomed to the new job.

To make the incident like a novel, it looks like the following.

A foreman at the manufacturing floor storms into the design room in a furioud manner with a large drawing at his hand.

The man asks in a threatining manner.

"Who wrote this drawing!?"

"DID YOU!?"

Well, who? is meaningless. First of all, the insignia of the man in charge is stamped at the lower right corner of the drawing.

Immediately after the "Yes" answer,

the veteran yells;

"Do YOU think?"
"The stuff can be manufactured with this type of a stupid drawing!?"

Still the surrounding people are very calm.

This type of happening repeats every year.

It is sorry for the freshman, as it is obvious that to make the right drawings is impossible for the young after skimming the surface of vast engineering subjects for four our five years at school.

Acc. to the person told me this story, it is true that the drawing has a drawback, but the rest is a play staged by the person at the manufacturing floor.

Needless to say, the freshman is fully taken care of after that by both the engineering department and the manufacturing site.

This was one of the way that the design office and the manufacturing floor together had raised the young persons.

Since it was set as a kind of rite of passage at the factory, the surrounding people was calm, as they knew the play was being made again.

This, however, can not be made anymore.

If that thing happens today, the youngman must quit the maker by saying "power harassment".

At the worst case, it is possible the case is brought to court for a defamation crime.

There is no other way than to seek the new ways following the mainstream trend.
